Forest to host Kentucky Reptile and Amphibian Day Sept 20 PDF Print E-mail
    Thursday September 11, 2008

Snakes, lizards and frogs aren’t to be feared – in fact, they’re an essential ingredient in keeping the balance at America’s largest municipally-owned forest. On Saturday, September 20, staff from the Jefferson Memorial Forest will show them the respect they deserve by hosting the Kentucky Reptile and Amphibian Day, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

In the past, Jefferson Memorial Forest has hosted a “Snake Appreciation Day,” but the event has since “shed its skin” and has been expanded to include all reptiles and amphibians.

“For the last several years, we have devoted a special day to snakes, to help people learn the importance of their place in the world,” said Christa Weidner, Jefferson Memorial Forest naturalist. “This year we wanted to include all reptiles and amphibians in on the fun.”

The September 20 program is geared towards those of all ages and will include speakers, booths, children’s activities and live demonstrations with reptiles and amphibians. The Environmental Education Center also will be open for viewing animal exhibits on that day. The program is free and open to the public.

Those who attend are encouraged to bring their cameras and a picnic lunch, but discouraged from bringing any reptile or amphibian pets. Directions: Jefferson Memorial Forest is located in Jefferson County off the Gene Snyder Freeway (I-265) and I-65 just 20 minutes from downtown Louisville. The address is: 11311 Mitchell Hill Road, Fairdale. For more information, call 502/368-5404 or visit http://www.louisvilleky.gov/MetroParks/parks/jeffersonmemorialforest/.
